Indispensable
By Yves
I purchased my Atlas SD 3900i nearly two years ago–it is still working great. Atlas has a variety of product models, I am unsure why this is the only one available for review. However, lucky for me, as I get to extoll the virtues of the one I own.
I bought this dictionary because I was unsatisfied with the “real” book-based Arabic dictionaries (I have had the chance to look at most of them). Each one had something good about it, and something bad. There was no singular solution which I thought was great for a beginning-intermediate learner. Moreover, there are some words (common, modern words) that the English-Arabic dictionaries simply don’t contain. I just was not real blown out of the water by any of them, and decided to purchase an electronic one.
This dictionary has single-handedly changed my ability to learn and understand Arabic. It is so nice to use! Simply type in the word, and it’s there! No flipping through pages in a big book. Moreover, the vocabulary is expansive. It contains many more words than any book-based dictionary. You can type a word in Arabic, or English, and receive a translation into the language of your choice. For each word it displays the Arabic with tashkeel (harakat), Roman transliteration, definition(s), and there is an audio feature as well. You can hear the pronunciation of every word! I didn’t come across a single-solution book dictionary with all of these features. The ease it creates in looking up words, its comprehensiveness, and the information it provides makes this truly invaluable! Without this, I probably would not have learned Arabic, despite having a general interest in the language. It’s just made my life so much easier! I use this dictionary as an aid for translating Classical Arabic. Two years ago, I could not understand, nor translate a classical text. Now, I can. Through self-study, using basic knowledge of grammar, and this Atlas, I can now understand and translate just about anything. Literally, without the ease and accessibility of this e-dictionary, I wouldn’t be able to do that. I see no virtue in spending countless hours flipping through a book, this dictionary helped me achieve my goals, and I now possess competency in Arabic.
Of course in learning or translation, it’s not just about vocabulary, but also verbs. To look up a verb, you can just type in its root. If you are close to the root, but a bit off, you can see the results pop-up in real time as you type in each character. So, you can see if you’re far off or not and need to change a letter. I would say that this dictionary meets 85% of my needs when translating classical texts. The words it does not contain are usually obscure and ancient, which I need to look up in Arabic sources to understand anyway. Sometimes it misses common stuff, but I find that to be the exception. For the most part, this does a wonderful job accommodating your needs, whether it’s a modern word, or you are reading a classical text. Sometimes you do need to type in a different form of a word, or add or take away an article (I find it to be a bit quirky with that sometimes), but for the most part, this has made my Arabic life, literally, a million times faster and easier. It has improved my understanding, the speed at which I can look things up, etc. Simply, it made it less burdensome to learn Arabic…focus on the language and your work, not flipping through a onerous half-decent dictionary. It has literally changed how I approach the language, and has aided me greatly. I mean…it’s a dictionary. It’s not that great. But, as far as Arabic dictionaries go, it’s pretty awesome.
As for size, it’s about as large as a bulky smartphone. It can fit in your pocket, with a bit of bulk. It also seems to have a headphone jack, and USB connection, although I have never used these. It also has two small plastic “legs” on the bottom, which make it easy to read on a surface. Keyboard feels great, and is easy to use. It basically mirrors the Arabic keyboard on a computer, with minor changes. Very easy to become acquainted with and use.
This might seem expensive, but it is the best investment I have ever made in terms of language materials–for any language. They’re more expensive at retailers in the Middle East, so, buy it online if you have the option.
This product also supposedly contains “19 specialized dictionaries,” a calculator, games, and an organizer. There also seems to be a “download” option, to “download many applications.” A voice recorder, mp3 player, calculator, etc. Also a brief factbook about different countries (timezone, currency, capital, country code, etc). I have never used any of these things on it, so I can’t evaluate them. No idea how much data this can hold, or how files are displayed, or how they sound once put on the device. It also seems to contain references for English grammar. Perhaps this product is originally intended for Arabic speakers learning English, but, works great the other way around. The “specialized dictionaries” include medicine, law, politics, science, engineering, and a host of others. I have never used them. I was under the impression that the words in them are part of the general dictionary I usually use. Not sure of that, though. However, they do contain word lists and look-up just for those subjects, which might be helpful.
If you are struggling to learn Arabic, but have the desire, and don’t want to hear lectures about the virtues of looking stuff up in a big, bulky dictionary…definitely buy this. To learning with ease and success!

Great product
By J. Franklin
The dictionary works well in both Arabic to English and English to Arabic. The only thing that took me a while to figure out was that to look up verbs in Arabic you do not use the 3 letter root in the “past” (I am not on a computer with an Arabic keyboard so I can’t type “al maadhee” here).
Instead you look up the third person singular masculine in the “present (“al mudhari3″). So to look up the verb “to write” one must type in “yaktub” instead of looking up “kataba” like you would in a normal dictionary.
It is a great product, definitely worth the money and it shipped fast as well. Next year will be easier for me (studying abroad for the year) as instead of carrying my Hans Wehr Arabic-English and my Oxford English-Arabic I am going to be taking this.
Bottom line: buy it.
